ELI5: Why do we placed the dollar sign in prior of a number but pronounce it, number an initial than currency. However when we have actually a percentage we place the price after and pronounce it as is?

The decimal point. Totality dollars room on the left, so the dollar sign is ~ above the left. Partial dollars (cents) are on the best side that the decimal point, so the cent authorize is on the right.

You are watching: Do you put the cent sign before or after

edit: typos

Wouldn't you still placed 23.84%? The whole number is ~ above the left side however the percent sign is tho on the right

But we never see "$xx.yy¢", and also "$0.5" is perfectly valid. Maybe I'm missing your point?

Furthermore, if us were to spell it together we say it, it would certainly be "2$50", no "$2.50".

I doubt it's nothing however tradition. It's not an SI unit, so there's probably never been any pressure to change it. Probably it's simply simply USA gift USA - I doubt the money symbol succeeds the numeric value in many cultures.

It's far better than the damned Outback Steakhouse guy. He drives me nuts v "Just 10 bucks, 99".

I'm Canadian, so I'm no sure about other countries but we would certainly write $100 prefer Americans would, yet in Quebec they create 100$. Additionally I noticed we would write $100.81 and also the French would certainly write 100,81$, so i think it depends what is usual practice because that the language.

Let's speak you paid me $100 through a check, and I'm one asshole:

If us did dollar authorize after the amount, 100.00$ could end up being 1,100$

If we did dissension sign prior to the amount, $100.00 could become $100.009

The factor we speak "amount-dollar" instead of "dollar-amount" is due to the fact that we began saying "amount-dollar" before checks to be a thing. And in this modern-day era where checks are a relic of a i delivered era the fewer and fewer companies and also countries also use, we continue to write "amount-dollar" due to the fact that fuck you, us never change tradition goddamnit!

Edit: Woopsie, boy fuck up.
