See more about salt and cooking in my related post, How “salt” can be the kiss of life (or death) in cooking.

You are watching: How much does a teaspoon of kosher salt weigh

Here’s a quick reference for common salt types and their weights in grams (per cup and per teaspoon), measured with a one cup and one teaspoon dry measuring cup and spoon, respectively, and my kitchen scale. Each measurement was taken 3 times and the rounded average was taken.

I hope this will make it easy for you to scale salt amounts for substitutions. Let me know if there are other types that would be helpful to you, and I’ll try my best to add them.

Note that salts containing additives can make clear solutions cloudy, and may add a harsh or chemical taste to foods.

Common Salt Weights & Substitutions

Quick equivalents:

1 teaspoon table salt≈1 1/4 teaspoons Morton Kosher Salt≈2 teaspoons Diamond Kosher Salt≈2 teaspoons Maldon Sea Salt Flakes

Other handy conversions:

1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons

1/4 cup = 4 tablespoons
